Jose Mª Marrero Ortega is counsel and heads the Litigation and Arbitration Department of URA Urquiza.

He has extensive experience in civil and commercial proceedings, as well as in arbitration and bankruptcy law.

Throughout his career, he has advised clients, both national and international, in proceedings before Courts and Tribunals throughout Spain, covering all judicial instances. He has also participated as legal director in arbitration proceedings before different Courts and Arbitration Chambers. His experience includes participation in cases before the Court of Justice of the European Union in Luxembourg.

He has extensive experience in pre-judicial negotiation procedures and in insolvency proceedings, advising both debtors and creditors and acting as insolvency administration lawyer. In the latter case, he has been involved in insolvency proceedings of great national and international relevance, such as Martinsa Fadesa, Thomas Cook or Grupo Blanco.

He has been a member of the Madrid Bar Association since 25 September 2000 and was a member of the Board of the Young Lawyers Group (GAJ) of the Madrid Bar Association from 2002 to 2004. He is also registered in the Official List of Lawyers authorised to act in bankruptcy proceedings in the Autonomous Community of Madrid and the Canary Islands.

Professional Career

José Mª Marrero Ortega graduated in Law at ICADE (E-1), specialising in Business Law, and completed a Master's Degree in Corporate Legal Consultancy (MAJ) at the Instituto de Empresa.

He began his professional career in 2000 in the Litigation Department of Ernst & Young (EY) in Madrid.

In 2007, he joined KPMG Abogados as Senior Manager in the Litigation and Insolvency Law Department in Madrid. In 2014 he assumed the leadership of the opening of the legal area of KPMG Abogados in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. During those years he assumed the responsibility as Director in the legal area of KPMG Abogados until 2024.

After 6 years at EY and 17 years at KPMG, in February 2025 he joined URA Urquiza as counsel, with the aim of leading and strengthening the Litigation and Arbitration Department in its offices in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

He has been recognised for two consecutive years, 2023 and 2024, in the international directory Best Lawyers.

Degree in Law (E-1), specialising in Business Law, Universidad Pontificia Comillas (ICADE), Madrid (1994-1999).

Master's Degree in Corporate Legal Consultancy (MAJ) from the Instituto de Empresa (2000).
